So, how did I get started with remote work? It all began with a passion. Since my high school days, I have always been passionate about reading and writing. I vividly remember coming home for the holidays and reading all the newspapers my dad had bought while I was away. Those moments richly improved writing abilities by enriching my vocabulary and world view. It was no surprise that I consistently topped my class in English and Literature.
At university, my passion for writing continued to flourish. I participated in international essay writing competitions, and while I didn’t win any, I shared my essays with friends and on social media. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with friends praising my work and encouraging me to keep going.
Encouraged by this “validation” I started exploring ways to turn my writing into an income. I signed up on freelancing platforms, eager to land high-paying clients. But the reality hit hard, I couldn’t secure a single client. Why? Because I had skipped an essential step: refining my skills to a professional level that could meet the demands of international clients.
I took a step back and sought guidance from a friend who was already thriving as a remote content writer. Under his mentorship, I worked on honing my skills and improving my craft. Armed with this newfound knowledge and confidence, I returned to freelancing platforms and started pitching for jobs.
That was in 2016, and within just a few months, my career took off. My earnings grew from $5 per article to $100 per article. With every project I delivered successfully, my reputation soared. Soon, the demand for my services was so high that I had to hire someone else to help manage the workload.
This is how my journey into remote work began: with a passion that I nurtured, refined, and transformed into a thriving career.
Many of you have passions that can be developed and packaged into opportunities for remote work. And that’s exactly why we created the Remote Professional Program to guide learners to discover their unique paths to remote work.
In Module 1, we explore the various pathways to launching a career in remote work. For some, the journey begins with leveraging their passions and existing skills, while others may need to cultivate a new skill for remote work. To guide you through this process, we have developed two powerful frameworks: one focuses on refining and adapting an existing skill for remote work, and the other helps you identify and build a new skill from the ground up.
And that’s just the beginning.
We are offering the Remote Professional Program for free to three youth support organizations to empower the young people they serve to embrace remote work as a viable career option. We have already received applications from two organizations, and there’s room for one more.
